Associations and Groups

The Italian Associazione Europea delle Vie Francigene (AEVF) based in Fidenza, Italy: Provides information on the route through Italy. (Italian and some English). 

The International Association Via Francigena (AIVF): The association provides information for the route from the UK to Italy.

The Confraternity of Pilgrims to Rome based in the UK has a library of information on the Via Francigena along with guidebooks for sale.

Association of Dutch Pilgrims to Rome is an active group, promoting walking and cycling to Rome from the Netherlands

The Via Francigena Yahoo Group is for those who have traveled or plan to travel the Via Francigena. It is an excellent resource center for those who are contemplating the journey.

Guidebooks

For those hikers and pilgrims wanting to walk from Gran San Bernardo to Rome along the Via Francigena, there are a limited number of guidebooks. Those worth considering are listed below.

Francigenalibrari provides road books and maps (in Italian only) of the pedestrian route of the Via Francigena from Gran San Bernardo to Rome. Also includes GPS and Google Earth coordinates for each stage, which are available to download for free at this link: 

LightFoot Guides. Paul Chinn and Babette Gallard are publishers of the LightFoot series of guidebooks. They have traveled the Via Francigena a numerous times and probably the best experts of the official route. Their LightFoot 3rd edition series of guidebooks are the best English guidebooks on the Via Francigena and their books cover the entire route from Canterbury to Rome into three parts.The three parts include the following:

The Via Francigena Pilgrim Trail: Canterbury to the Great St Bernard Pass Pt. 1: Canterbury to Rome By Alison Raju.
Due out in September 15 2011, this is one of series of guidebooks published by
Cicerone Press. This will be the second English language guidebook on the Via Francigena. ISBN-13: 978-1852844875

La Via Francigena. Sur la trace des pèlerins de Canterbury à Rome

Lawyer, hiker, photographer and author Jean-Yves Grégoire walked the Via Francigena from Canterbury to Rome and wrote a French language guidebook for the route. He is author and co-author of at least twenty French language books cover various long distance hiking trails in Europe. This latest book on the Via Francigena covers the entire 1,900 km route from Canterbury to Rome in 12 sections focusing mostly on the historical elements of the trail. The book is available on Amazon. ISBN-13: 978-2737348815

Guida alla via Francigena. 900 chilometri a piedi sulle strade del pellegrinaggio verso Roma (Guide to the Via Francigena. 900 km walk on the roads of the pilgrimage to Rome)

Authors Monica D'Atti and Franco Cinti first published an Italian language guidebook on the Via Francigena back in 2006 and this is the second and latest edition published in 2010. The guidebook covers in 38 stages, the path of the Via Francigena from Montgenevre (the alternate route that originates from France) to Rome. The book is available on Amazon. ISBN -13: 978-8861891494

In addition, accompanying the guidebook, the same authors have published a series of maps that cover the exact same route: “The Francigena. 1:30,000 maps and GPS.” The package includes three large overview and 42 detailed map. The package unfortunately not available from Amazon but they can be ordered directly from the publisher, Terre di Mezzo. ISBN-13: 978-8861891319

Schweiz Italien, Via Francigena written by Ingrid Retterath and published by Conrad Verlag Stein, due out April 1 2011. ISBN-13: 9783866862814

This second edition is an update to the previous edition published in March 2007. The 2007 edition is now available as an ebook Schweiz/Italien: Via Francigena written by Birgit Götzmann (ISBN 978-3869202016)

The guide covers the distance from Lausanne to Rome and provides hikers a cultural and historical overview of the route. The book describes in detail the route and gives practical information on places of interest, accommodation, and places to eat.

Magazines

“Via Francigena: Great European Culture Route” is the official magazine of the European Association of "Vie Francigene." Printed in Italian and English, and published twice yearly, it promotes places, itineraries, tourist and cultural projects connected with the Via Francigena. The magazine also features opinions, comments, and interviews, and offers advice.
